Hi folks, can anyone tell me whether there is a way to pick up the email address of the originator if one has the IP address? In other words, can one obtain the email address or other detail of the person responsible for having done something malicious on the internet simply from the IP address, or is one bound to only get as far as the service provider?
I ask this because I have been given the IP address for something malicious having been done on the internet against me (time and date as well). The ISP has refused to give me the details of their client other than to confirm that the IP address I provided them is one of their clients. They are doing this in spite of the fact that section 35 of the Data Protection Act 1998 (UK) excludes personal data from protection if it is required to obtain legal advice (something which I have informed them of).
I would rather get the info quickly if possible than have to get a court order to force them to provide it.
